you should just smile and say thanks. my nanna is a pain when it comes to gifts. she is 86 and has EVERYTHING! when it comes to birthdays/Christmas i dont know what to buy and if i get something she doesn't like she will tell me there and then or she will say 'i didn't need that, or, what have you bought that for?' and it really hurts my feelings so now i only buy chocolates! just be grateful as it definitely is the thought that counts. x

Of course you just say thank you!

It's definitely the thought that counts - and it's really hard to buy for other people; no matter how well you know them. Say for example he bought you a tapestry with elephants on it because he knows you collect elephant statues and artwork.... but he didn't realise you don't like tapestries. It could be that he's put a lot of thought into your gift and thought he'd got it right - rather than having not put any thought into it at all.

I once got given a large, gold-painted, lying-down-Buddha statue that I hated. I had once said that I loved Buddha statues - but I was thinking of the small, wooden, cross-legged ones. How was this person to know? He thought he was getting me a great present, bless him!

Keep the gift and be grateful for it. You might actually find that it grows on you in time.

xx Emmie

EDIT - tell us what it is - maybe one of us would like it!

I had a friend who took up knitting... one day I went round and she produced this jumper.. it was stripped, with all the colours of the rainbow, had a neck hole that a hamster wouldn't have managed to squeeze into, one arm 3 inches longer than the other, and shoulder pads on each shoulder, that an 'American Baseball Player' wouldn't have been seen dead in.. well actually I doubt whether you'd have got them into the coffin, sideways or lying straight.

What did I do... er. nothing, at the time., didn't want to offend, cause I love her to bits.

The following year I bought from a Charity Shop, a jumper, and 'jazzed it up' with the shoulder pads, the ones out of mine, and ironed one sleeve, till it was longer than the other !!she looked at me, and I asked did she 'love it' ?? and then we laughed..we both then confided about our prezzi's.

After this, we decided to be honest, and truthful to each other, not just about our presents, but about everything, we ever did as friends, for the rest of our lives.

truthfully yours... a friend x

Yes, by all means say thank you and forget about it. It reminds me of the time a boss of mine went on a cruise and he brought us all a container of Bahamas beach sand in a container attached to a cord to be worn as a necklace. We all just looked at each other and without saying a word to each other with a dumbfounded look on our faces.

Yes. Even if you don't like something you're given, you should always smile and say thank you. Just like I'm sure you've heard a million times..."It's the thought that counts."

Jeez you cant exchange the gift or your friend for another one!
Probability the gift was measured by "I'm thinking of you and hope you enjoy this!"
You have taken acceptance of the gift, therefore let the bond of friendship be strengthen.
Everybodys tastes are definitely different...
