it could happen..usually the nerds "smart people" aren't popular in school but they become rich when their older.

Sounds like your sister's point is that a lot can change after high school. You will experience much and grow much after your graduate. While you are in high school, things seem so permanent (like you're stuck being the nerd, the jock, the tease, etc.), but in the bigger "real" world, people won't care (or even know) about your reputation. You will have to prove yourself and stand on your own actions and talents, which can be very freeing or very frightening.
I was the "smart kid" in high school - all A's, ran track and cross-country, was the president of clubs, etc. All my teachers and classmates knew it, and I really rode on that reputation. But when I got to college, no one knew or cared about all that. It sounds funny, but I would get a "B" on a paper and think "but I'm an A student!" I had to really produce excellent work to receive excellent grades. The same is true now in my job. My boss doesn't give a crap what my GPA was - he wants me to do my work well and on-time.
So don't worry about other's opinions so much in high school. Try your best to enjoy yourself. Stay true to who you are, not your reputation. ;)

The only thing that matters is who you are on the inside.
What other people think of you in school becomes entirely invisible to the adults you'll be interfacing with in the rest of your life.
I was hated in school...I had boys yell horrible names at me... asked me if I wanted to dance, then said "Have fun!"...Was called a dyke by some folks who had never met me before, but decided it would be fun to call me names...Had urine and spit thrown on me...it was really bad.
The friends I have now as an adult are shocked to hear these stories. They can't believe that those dummies in school didn't take the time to learn what an amazing person I am ('cause I am!). I'm the same person I was back then. The only difference is that I'm now dealing with adults, who don't judge me just because I don't hang out with the "right" crowd.
Who you are on the inside always counts. Other people's interpretation of who you are is irrelevant, until they know the real you.

Not necessarily, it's mainly something people tell you so that you can sleep at night. The only real certainty is that the nerds will get better jobs and hopefully live happier and more productive lives as a result.

That can happen. It mostly depends if you are honest with yourself in high school or not. Those who pretended to be someone they weren't will not be able to keep pretending and will end up disappointed. Those who are honest with themselves and others will be successful with what they do in life.
