Just curious, since most of my friends talk about taking them casually, also are they included in the '4 year degree'?

No, Summer courses are not required. Summer is considered incidental. However, if you take coursework during the Summer, you can possibly take less coursework during the regular semesters. Keep in mind that Summer courses are accelerated therefore it is not recommended to take more than 8 credits per Summer Session.

Also, if you are on Financial Aid (FA), if you attend the Summer Session, your FA will come from an excess FA that you was awarded to you during the academic year that you have not already used.

Best wishes on your college career!

If you consider a four year degree being awarded with at least 120 credits completed, then you would have to take 5 classes per semester to get your degree in four years.

Summer classes are usually one month, but meet either 5 days a week, or are twice as long.
The summer classes can either help you catch up if you are a part time student, or can help you graduate in less than 4 years.

They are not required but some people prefer to take a class or two over the summer so they are not to busy during the other semesters. Others will use the summer to retake classes that they didn't do so well in the first time.

Summer courses are not required, but you can take them anyway. Many summer courses do satisfy degree requirements. Taking summer course or two can ease the burden of having to take them during the academic year when the tendency is to load yourself down with too much.

No, Summer is just for catch up or to finish early. Most summer courses are compressed and many people find them more difficult because they move through material faster. Very few people actually take them and if they do they take one or two courses, not a full load.

No -- they are not required, and you have to pay extra to take them.
