The ozone isn't harmful to Earth, it actually protects the Earth from dangerous UV rays from the sun. What is hurting the Earth is the damage to the ozone caused by our own consumerism. CFC's or choloroflorcarbons emitted from aerosol cans is destroying the ozones. Pollution and other things are also damaging. This has resulted in an increase in the temperature (global warming) and heating up the oceans and therefore killing marine life. It is also melting polar ice caps and causing the oceans to flood, causing certain countries, like Thailand, to sink partly into the ocean.

Ozone is extremely reactive and will "burn" almost anything with which it comes into contact, and is considered a poisonous gas when indiscriminately released in the troposphere in large quantities. Ozone is used in small quantities, however, as a bleach, a bactericide, and air deodorizer.

the Ozone layer is not harmful to the earth at all because it protects us (the "inhabitants") from the sun's Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) waves. it's Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) that are harmful to earth because the molecules from CFC's travel up into the atmosphere and "rip" a oxygen molecule from an ozone atom, thereby turning it from an Ozone (O3) molecule to a regular oxygen (O2) molecule.

contrary to another answerer, Carbon Dioxide (or other gasses) pollution from factories, cars, etc. does NOT affect the ozone layer, but it does contribute to Global Warming.
