The phone polls are controlled by corporations. The straw polls are conducted by the people.
Neither is very accurate, you need to look at both, and see which one is more in line with other factors, such as fund raising and attendance at the rallies. The internet lets us see a few more things, that may or may not be indicative of support, such as web-traffic, and google searches.

How about actual elections?
Straw polls are the ones where people have to pay to vote. They are not official. In the Iowa Straw poll earlier this year where Romney won, participants paid $85 for the right to vote, and only about 140 people paid for that privilege.
Telephone polls will take a much larger sample of the population, usually about 500-600 voters of each party, and also ask why the voters are showing support for a candidate. And participation is FREE.

Telephone polls are more valid as they are more random. If the supports of a candidate know a straw poll is going to be conducted, they can stuff the box (so to speak) by bringing a dispassionate number of people to the gathering. They have even done straw polls at rallies for specific candidates.

Straw Polls, they keep the suspense in the races. I like it when they go up and down, and set back and watch the candidates, and the Bias press get their pannies all in a wad. Because I know until after super Tuesday we have no idea what going to be a little stable. This one is a little different for me though, because of our troops, I can't have as much fun as I uauassly do, But I am listening real good. and praying that I make the right choice.. Hope you find your answer.

Telephone polls. Straw polls are only done within one group of people. Like all the republicans get together and vote on which republican they want to represent them. Neither poll is binding though so it doesn't really matter.

telephone polls conducted by the state run mass media are aimed at certain demographic areas to achieve predetermined results, but get the opinion of the less informed less interested less motivated.
Straw polls reflect the opinions of more informed and more motivated people who are more likely to actually vote.
