I've never used either of these, but am interested in 3-d character design. I want to design buildings, characters, and clothes. Like the ones in Final Fantasy. How much does each program cost with a student discount. Do you need to go to school to learn them. The reason I want these programs is to help visualize my characters, and settings that I'm writing for my script.

Maya is definately more commonly taught and used in companies. If you're planning on doing anything with them other than for yourself. Maya is very expensive however. I know it used to be in the 3,000-4,000 range, but that was a long time ago, and I'm not sure at all about the business model anymore.

You may find openGL, or Illustrator to be better for you, openGL is basically an add-on library that's compatible with alot of languages and you say "draw a cube" and you get one, or "draw a cylander", it's a little difficult if you don't have programming experience.

Illustrator is nice in that it gives you shape tools and you can scale to any amount, but it also requires at least investment in a book to learn to use it.

I'd imagine you're as capable as I am at searching the web, but I'd look for an openSource tool to do it.

I've never heard of Poser.

Google has Google Sketchpad.

Why you dont just go to their websites and check out the features ? they are both capable, its a matter of taste and how you use it that determines the purchase, as for the price, again why not email them for the correct price ?
