The data from sky-searches by satellites and wide-view automatic telescopes are available to the public, so it would be very hard to hide something like that.

Unknownspiritx5,
A giant asteroid has already hit the earth and destroyed it.
We were able to preserve the human expression and have saved all of your memories along with many many others of your kind. You are in a virtual enhanced reality module right now until we are able to reunite your essence, your thoughts, your reality into another organic being at which time we are having difficulties finding a proper host and compatible environment. We put this question into your head as a way to reassure you that you are not alone. More information will be given to you shortly. Earth may be able to recover but not likely in your lifetime.
Salutations from gamma 7 representative,
Otto_tagger

there is an asteroid heading in the direction of us which would be so close that it will bypass below our communication satellites, yet i do no longer think of it is going to happen until sometime around 2030. there is a few thing up with the 12 months 2012 in spite of the shown fact that, countless historical calendars mysteriously end there, so who's familiar with.

Only AFTER it already smashed into the earth. Then again, even that is iffy.
Tough call, I guess if if landed on, and only ON, government building would they give us an inkling that something occurred. But by the time they put the 10,000 page report together, we'd all be dead anyway.

There's a pretty high probability that we wouldn't see it coming until it's was almost upon us. I don't think that we should be notified, personally. Pretty big story to contain. Can you just imagine what would happen?! I wouldn't want to live anywhere near a city.

You know, many interesting astronomical phenomena (this one would qualify) are discovered by amateurs, who can spend time exploring wide areas of the sky and seeing if anything has changed.
Once they find something interesting, the pros can zoom in with more powerful equipment.

I think the year is 2038 when one will come very close, between us and our sattelites. Watch the discovery channel.

If it was too big to do anything about what would be the point of panicking everybody?
