I have a 2000 honda civic ex. I bought it about 2 months ago for $4000. Now it has 86k miles.
Last week my power steering belt and alternator belt came loose...So the car wouldnt start. I had it towed to my mechanic and now it needs to have those belts replaced AND a new timing belt AND a crank shaft pulley replaced.

For parts and labor he's charging $550 dollars

Is that too much for the work or is it an ok deal?

Sounds good. Always change the water pump when changing the timing belt. Otherwise if the water pump starts to leak, the timimg belt has to be removed again. labor $$

The price is about right for the job.

Not sure on why the crank shaft pulley needs to be replaced unless it's somehow bad, but it's rare for them to go bad, so ask why that's being replaced, but for $550, everything sounds legit, the timing belt is difficult to get to and the majority of the charge will be the labor to get the timing belt replaced.

You may want him to inspect the water pump and the timing belt pulley and replace those too since you're already putting in the money for him to tear that much of the engine apart.

The timing belt by it self is about $400 - $450 (parts and labor). Those other belts have to be removed and re-installed anyway during replacing the timing belt replacement (so he should only charge for the parts for PS belt, etc.).

Why would you need crank shaft pulley?

But assuming all are legit, the price seems right.

Good Luck.
