Up until I retired I used to get a statement from social security telling how much was paid in every year since I started working as a teenager, does not everyone get one of those?

I'm sure the records are available to you once you establish your identity. Start by contacting the Social Security Office. You can search for their web site. It's pretty comprehensive.
