They emigrate here, set up shop and family.
they are free from religious persecution. There is the protection of Law and yet they still wear the full burka. The government isnt going to give them 200 lashes.

Should she better herself and work at hooters or a strip club and join the ranks of modern "free" western women?

These are views from an article "Reuters Give Afghan Women a Makeover. http://www.racialicious.com/2007/10/09/reuters-gives-afghan-women-a-makeover/
I love to clip others unfortunately yahoo doesn't extend their field.
Comment 1:As a woman from a third world country that is quite conservative I must say, that despite what many Americans think, for us it can be liberating to have modelling shows and the opportunity to show our sexuality. We want the freedom to express if we are sluts or prudes, girly or tomboy etc. If too much sexual freedom and Americanization = a country flooded with whores, I think it’s better than a country that represses the sexually free woman and condemns their actions. If I want to wear a mini skirt/shorts (considered the uniform of a prostitute in my country), no one should have anything to say about it (often girls would get arrested for wearing mini skirts)! I love ANTM because they can be naked/sexual on TV and not fear for their lives because of it. Whether it’s good or bad, it’s their choice! I sincerely doubt Afghani women currently have much choice in the matter.
That aside the reporter was exotifying them in the most ridiculous way. But at least he quoted a man who echoed the way many strict Afghani men (and men in my country) think - why pretend it’s not like that?

[…] Mr. Boffo wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerptJon Hemming for Reuters reports that a city in Afghanistan has its own answer to America’s Next Top Model. The news agency boasts that the television show “is breaking boundaries and revealing the beauty under the burqa

Comment 2:Women who are devout Muslims, who are fasting, who pray, etc. We’re not talking infidels here.
And I don’t mean men generally (ie the patriarchy) tell wives and/or daughters what to wear in certain circumstances. I mean it literally, as in, a father tells his teenage daughter to wear a veil and she does… except when she’s in a more western institution and out of site of dad and she takes it off I see this everyday where I work; some young women keep it on but many remove it–now you try arguing that it’s their “choice” to wear hijab. There are many, many devout Muslim women in Egypt who do NOT wear hijab. So you can’t dismiss this as “traditional” or “cultural” or “religious.” *That* is simplistic. Why can’t we accept that some women in the Middle East would prefer not to dress a way they feel they must?
My opinon: Even though these women arrives here in USA doesn't change their beliefs toward their practical ways. bring. I am quite sure that they know its a choice but its their beliefs. We have women in USA who wear other head coverings because of their religous and its still a choice, I know my sister-in-law adorns herself and daughter because its states in the bible "women should adorn them self and their head should be covered". Let me share...I used to weare long skirts, opaque stockings, hats on my head when I was younger. This was my father's way in dressing his girls. Now when I became a woman, I choose to dress differently. Why are we making a big deal of women in the Middle East? There wasn't a big deal of Holiness/Penacostal Women on how they dress.

I live in France and yes, I'm against the wearing of the Burka in public places. It goes against our principles and we believe we should be able to see the person we're talking too. I find it freaky to have a burka-clothed person (you can't even say 'woman' for sure) sit down right next to you when you can't see a centimetre of her skin, face, eyes, NOTHING. Hell, it could be anyone under there! They're on the news pretty often in France, so I can answer your question. A few women have been on TV, wearing burkas. They are converted Muslims and CHOSE to wear the burka. Still, I'm pretty sure not ALL Muslim women chose to wear the burka. In fact some (again, basing myself on what I saw on TV) are against the burka and state it's said nowhere in their book that they should wear a burka. They stick with the plain veil covering the hair and that's fine for them, and for the majority of the French people. As for it looking 'sexy' on young women... You can't even see their body shape, I don't see how it could be considered 'sexy'. Oh, and... At least a balaclava doesn't hide your body OR the entirety of your face. Here I took 'burka' as meaning 'Abaya + burka', which is what most French people believe it is. This would be the garment covering the body, and the burka, as in the veil covering the face. Some burkas, also, cover only from below the eyes (I think), but again, I took it to mean the WHOLE face covering, which again is what we French people are against.

Wow, so much hate and vitriol being spewed forth from the foaming mouths of rabid rightwingers. (Then again, what else is new?)

In Muslim and Middle Eastern countries, the hijab is a sign of modesty amongst women. Simply immigrating here to the states does not mean they shed their entire culture at the door in favor of more "revealing" Western-style dress just to fit in.

Also, I find it ridiculous from those who automatically assume that all of these women are somehow "forced" by their husbands and families to wear the headscarf, burka, what-have-you. They can only cherry-pick extreme cases (such as the recent one in Canada involving the father killing his daughter ALLEGEDLY because of the refusal to wear the hijab) and use those to paint the entire flock with the same brush.

People in the USA are not forced to put away the Burka. If someone wants to wear it, they can. If someone wants to work at Hooters they can, or maybe Applebees if they can stand it.
In the Middle East everyone is forced to wear the Burka or they get beat up or raped or arrested.

Some women in the USA are forced to wear a burka because their husbands force them to or their family forces them to.

SORRY BUT WESTERN WOMEN ARE FREE'ER THAN FUNDAMENTALIST MIDDLE EASTERN COUNTRIES

I'm sure they do it for the same reason many of the Jews in NYC still adhere to the customs they brought over from Eastern Europe generations ago - tradition.

[TEVYE]
Tradition, tradition! Tradition!
Tradition, tradition! Tradition!

[TEVYE & PAPAS]
Who, day and night, must scramble for a living,
Feed a wife and children, say his daily prayers?
And who has the right, as master of the house,
To have the final word at home?

The Papa, the Papa! Tradition.
The Papa, the Papa! Tradition.

[GOLDE & MAMAS]
Who must know the way to make a proper home,
A quiet home, a kosher home?
Who must raise the family and run the home,
So Papa's free to read the holy books?

The Mama, the Mama! Tradition!
The Mama, the Mama! Tradition!

[SONS]
At three, I started Hebrew school. At ten, I learned a trade.
I hear they've picked a bride for me. I hope she's pretty.

The son, the son! Tradition!
The son, the son! Tradition!

[DAUGHTERS]
And who does Mama teach to mend and tend and fix,
Preparing me to marry whoever Papa picks?

The daughter, the daughter! Tradition!
The daughter, the daughter! Tradition!

Because they feel most comfortable with it. They've always grown up with a standard where it's inappropriate to show too much skin so they still feel that in their minds. Imagine going to a completely different planet with nudist colonies through the planet. They would likely think of nudity as if it were nothing. You, however, having grown up with clothes, would probably feel awkward walking around naked even though it would be perfectly acceptable. Or not, depending how you feel about nudity. It's all personal opinion.

Oh, come on! There's so much to experience between working at Hooters and wearing a burka. Kind of a slam to us American women, and completely ridiculous.

Probably because in spite of American freedoms their husbands are still in charge.

Consider the girl in Canada whose Muslim father recently killed her by strangling allegedly for not wearing Muslim dress.

Rightfully so, very few women in the United States wear a burka. I have seen only one here in my entire life.

On a side note, you better be careful with that avatar of yours. In the enlightened East that you live in someone might see it and have a casus belli to commit an honor killing.
