My local Catholic club used to be frequented by preists and nuns accepting free drinks.

I suppose that any kind of over indulgence is classified as 'gluttony' and is therefore a deadly sin according to catachisms and dogma.

The Catholic Church was one of the few major groups to oppose Prohibition, and that for a simple reason. There is nothing inherently immoral about alcohol. Catholicism tolerates alcohol, dancing, smoking, gambling, theater, and most of the other fun things in life. However, it prohibits any sexual activity other than unprotected intercourse between married couples.

But to much food will kill you as well. The general stand on Alcohol is that we are not to abuse it, just like we are not to over eat and kill ourselves with food either - all things in moderation.

Officially it condemns the excessive use of it, yet historically it has used alcohol abuse to its advantage.

I would say it would be considered wrong if you do something destructive to your body in excess.
