Do you need an actual psychiatrist or will some other sort of counselor/therapist work for you? Psychiatrists are necessary if you will need prescription drugs.

If you don't actually need a psychiatrist, one low-cost alternative is to look into your local YWCA. I've been going to a counselor for over 3 years. The counselors there are fulfilling their internships before being able to practice independently. As a result, YWCA is able to charge a very reasonable sliding scale for their services.

Many branches of the Salvation Army also offers individual and family counseling.

Good luck!

I don't know but am in the same situation except mine is not a psychiatrist, but a dermatologist. So far, I have not found any assistance. Is there a clinic in your area with any psychological services? They can help, but they are not allowed to prescribe medication.

First, call around to some of the local psych clinics, and ask them to help you find referrals... often they'll have rosters of low-cost services that are harder for the layperson to find.

Second, are there any low-cost medical clinics in your area? Physicians can prescribe psych meds too.

Third, once you do find one, needymeds.com is a good resource for lower-cost medications for people with fewer means...

Good luck!

My church has a congregational care ministry made up of professionals who offer their services to the community at no fee. Even if you are not a member, I can give you a number and you can call them. If you dont live in my city/state they can still talk to you over the phone.... email me.

Does your employer have an employee assistance program?

Otherwise, talking to a priest, pastor, or a clergy person would be beneficial.
