Mark David Chapman
He was a fan. They even have a picture of him in the newspaper with him getting an autograph from John Lennon.
We don't know his true motives. I think he was a crazy man.
Read about it here.

Mark David Chapman shot John Lennon after reading "To Kill A Mockingbird" and was mentally ill, so he didn't have a technical motive.

Mark Chapman. His motives ? He was mad,. No motives. He waitted outside Lennon's house for some 14 hours waiting for Lennon to return from the studio and shot him for no reason. Don't dwell on it. People kill only in either self defence or because they are insane.

Mark Chapman did it.
He pretty much did it for fame.
In an interview,
he was talking about how he had nothing and John Lennon had everything he wanted. He got sick of it and decided to kill John, he also said that he wanted to be famous. After doing it, he said that it wasn't worth it.
Because he did it for fame, after John's death,. George Harrison said that so he wouldn't get his fame, nobody should say his name. Don't let everyone know the name so that the guy wouldn't get what he wanted...that kind of thing.

Mark David Chapman . and whats more interesting is he is almost always referred to with all three names....like most assassins....john wilkes booth, lee harvey oswald...but failed assassins are only spoken about with first and last name...like John Hinckley, president reagan didnt die...so ...only two names.
there is a good history channel special on the Lennon killing and how the FBI had him under surveillance etc......some conspiracy theories that will make you think.
i also believe there was a copy of "a catcher in the rye" in Chapman's apartment
