You should have some idea of what you would want to major in because it would make things a bit easier as you would know where to focus your studies, however if you need to, you can register with an undeclared major. If you come in undeclared you will have to find a major within the first year or two depending on the school because by your junior year you need to be working toward completing that degree.

I would say take a career assessment but to be honest they don’t really help in my opinion.....they tend to just list a lot of career without really being tailored to who you are. I took one once and every question related to working with children I said “no” and when I got my list I saw teacher, child care director and something else dealing with children.........after that point I stopped taking those things seriously.

In the end you just need to figure out what makes you happy and what you can see yourself doing for years to come. Don’t think about the classes that you have to take to get there because no matter what you choose, most likely you will dislike some of the classes, just focus on the career itself.

Okay, it's not too late... this is the right time to start thinking about a career. Since you have so much in the science, thinking about becoming a doctor is a great idea. Let me know if you want more information on pre-med since I am on the medical track. Try to take more advanced classes next year since colleges like to see you challenge yourself. Keep that GPA and you will be a perfect fit for NYU or Stony Brook!

As a junior in high school, you should have already taken your SAT and if possible, the ACT as well. Your grades are decent, especially if you've been taking AP or honors classes.

Another question you need to be asking is, how are you going to pay for college (tuition, dorm, books). If you already know what you want to study, or even have a general clue, then find the school with the best program for that area and pay the price. It's totally acceptable to go enter college with an undeclared major. But for someone with absolutely no idea of what they want to study, I really have a hard time justifying paying thousands of dollars for a private college or even for an out-of-state college. If money is not an issue for you or your parents, then lucky for you. But otherwise, find a college in-state that offers a wide variety of subjects (strong in humanities as well as science, offers a variety of departments). Your first semester or two, take introductory courses in areas that you think you are interested in, and start taking courses that fulfill your general education requirements, which can also be a good way to test out different areas of study.

Meanwhile, start preparing for and taking SATs and ACT exams. Your scores, along with your GPA, will be a good indication of which colleges you may be accepted into. You can then start looking for scholarship opportunities as well. Also, for the rest of this year and your senior year, try volunteering or doing an internship in a field you think you might be intersted in. Volunteer in a hospital if you think you want to be a doctor. Intern in a law office if you think you want to study law. It looks great on your resume, you'll gain work experience, and it'll start giving you a sense of what you like and dislike. Once in college, continue to try different internships/volunteer opportunities until you decide on a career path. Once you decide, do internships etc related to your field.

You can get into a lot of very good universities with your grades and SAT scores (assuming you actually get an 1800). I think it will be tough to get into NYU unless you get a higher SAT score -- but Stony Brook is a real possibility for you.

Princeton Review has a tool where you can enter information about your background and interests & it will suggest schools for you. See the link below.

Ask your guidance counselor what he or she feels is best for your scores. You can always enter college undeclared and/or transfer if need be.
