The state I live in also has no set laws regarding the minimum age for children to be left home alone. However, if the Division of Family Services is called, the child must be able to demonstrate a proficient level of responsibility. For example, the child must know the proper procedures for being safe (answering the door, using the phone to call for help or assistance, knowing not to cook or use knives, knowing house rules for what is appropriate play while the caregiver is out, etc, etc)
So, it really depends on the maturity level of the child and the area you live in...

There was a news story on this. They said "In South Carolina, there are no set laws, but officials say no child under 8 should be left alone." See http://www.nbcaugusta.com/features/goodquestion/2793961.html

There isn't one - nor is there in most other States.
It's up to the parents to decide, based on the circumstances. However, if they make an 'unreasonable' decision, they could face prosecution for child endangerment.
Leave an 8 year old alone for five minutes while you go next door for a cup of sugar? Probably fine. Leave a 12 year old alone for a week while you go on vacation to Hedonism? Expect to go to jail.
