I am looking into buying a men's sports coat. I need a 40 short. Unfortunately, the one I want only comes in 40 regular. Is it safe to buy that 40 regular and have it altered?

Depends on where the length is taken from. If the body poertion is too long, will need to take it up at the shoulders and bottom so the buttons will be properly centered. That can cause some problems with the armholes. Look on line for the item, or see if the shop can order the correct size. A tailor making it from scratch would be cheaper than purchasing and having altered properly.

Yea, just have a look at the coat first. If you have things like pockets or er...something other than just fabric near the bottom you might have a problem.

Hemming is pretty easy. If you're not sure, pick it up and ask a tailor if they can help you - it's not uncommon. I'm a shortie, so I learned early on how to hem my own clothes.

It gets complicated if you try to resize the whole torso, just hemming the length and arms is pretty easy!

Take it to a tailor. They can probably shorten it a bit.
