I don't necessarily have a favorite, but rather a favorite kind.
The Russian Fairytales!
Why? Because they usually involve hacking the heads off of three-, nine- and twelve-headed dragons, witches' houses spinning on chicken's legs, a princess hidden in a blade of grass growing on a glass mountain seven leagues away...
You get where I'm going here ;)
All the old, not so well known fairytales (i.e. the ones the Brothers Grimm didn't recreate in PG rating) have a good measure of magic, revenge, bloodshed and monsters in them. I've loved them since I was a little girl.

My favorite fairytale is King Midas. Everything he touched turned to gold even his family.

My favorite has always been East o' the Sun, West o' the Moon. I like it for a lot of reasons, but mostly for the strong female character. Yes, she makes a mistake at the beginning, but she redeems herself fully by risking everything to rescue the one she loves. My favorite version of the tale is probably the one written by Naomi Lewis and illustrated by P.J. Lynch.

Cinderella. I had an evil mother, not stepmother, and I dreamed of being rescued by a handsome prince. Plus, I loved all the clothes she got to wear!

Little Red Riding hood. Because, in the words of Stephen Sondheim's version: "Isn't it nice to know a lot...

"and a little bit not!"

Rapunzel....... When I was growing up I used to pretend to be her because my hair was away down to my bum....

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair, so that I may climb the golden stair....

Ah memories... ;0)
