My mother told me this phrase earlier. What does this signify? Does she mean that if one becomes successful people will hate/be envious of his or her success? Or what?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... :)

maybe to some, but not all, speaking for myself. how can it be hard to celebrate(in our hearts) with those who do well in life?
I always pray that every single person in this world didn't have to suffer anymore from poverty, low self-esteem and the like..personal hate issues with the person is different story, being happy for their success is humanly kindly. one can hate a person eternally forever, but at the same time happy and wish that only good things to happen for them.

Many people resent success which they cannot have. I can understand that somewhat if people have never had a chance to succeed, and we should not kid ourselves about that. Many people never have a chance.

Many people have a chance and don't take advantage of it, and these should not resent somebody who makes the most of their opportunities, so long as they do in honestly.

You will find that good luck and good connections have more to do with success than is generally recognized. A few rare souls will tell you "I don't know why I'm a success, I didn't work hard for it nor am I very smart" But most will tell you their achievements are the result of brains, hard work and personality.

These people you will find spend too much time considering other peoples lives rather than being happy with there own. Success is built on hard work and commitment - Good luck go for it.

It is a profound if questionable contention, but also a bit of a paradox because people do not readily forgive failure either. Recent proof the reaction of football crowds in England to those players who participated when Croatia put England out of European Nations Cup.

But the fundamental fact is that one person's or group's failure is due to another person's or group's success. If I fail to get a job I might find it hard to forgive the person who got it instead of me because I feel he caused my failure and my subjugation. Likewise he might find it hard to forgive me if I got the job instead of him?

Most people are envious of someone that has or becomes more than they think they have. Especially if your close or even accuainted. We admire the rock star because we don't really know them, but if it were your cousin, you might think he's a prick.

Only people born in an Altruistic society act like that, for altruism breeds passive aggressive behavior, for it's in conflict with the natural state of being self serving.

I would say this statement goes hand in hand with "misery loves company." I think what your mom is trying to say is that often times when people succeed no one is around to support them. Like the person said before me, jealousy?

Yes jealousy is a powerful, but destructive emotion ! That is why the good lord put, "Thou shall not covet," as his tenth commandment !

Out of jealousy, people build resentments and hold on to them.
