Prostitution is illegal under the law but it is tolerated in the society due to lack of funds to apprehend them and put those involved in jail.

Being a prostitute is not illegal in Canada...but the things that prostitutes do makes it illegal. The sale or offer for sale of sex in Canada is illegal. There are many charges that can be put forward...soliciting for the purpose...(both john and prostitue) living off the avails (if your a pimp). In fact in some parts of Canada you can lose your car if you are found soliciting prostitutes for sex...(Edmonton, Ab, Canada). We do have "Bawdy" houses here, but they are also illegal. So the general answer to your question is it is LEGAL to be a prostitute, but ILLEGAL if you use it for solicitation purposes. Hope this helps.

No, although prostitution has never been illegal in Canada, many of the peripheral activities intimately related with it are so penalized. Communicating for the purposes of prostitution, soliciting, keeping a common bawdy house, procuring, and living off the avails of prostitution are some examples of the type of activities that are criminalized according to the legal system.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US it is unconstitutional to pass a law making a status (i.e. being a prostitute, being a drug addict, being a blind person, whatever) illegal. ACTS are illegal, such as having sex in exchange for money, but the status of being a prostitute is not illegal.

No.
If you have consensual sex with a guy, and then he gives you a gift (money) thats fine.
Its argumentative, as long as no one can prove you are running a business.
