Kwanzaa means "first fruits" in Swahili and is celebrated by some African-American around the time of Christmas and Chanukah. It is amusing to me because most African-Americans' roots go back to West Africa where no one speaks Swahili. It's the equivalent of a Navajo studying the Iroquois language

Actually spelled Kwanzaa. It is a yearly African American heritage festival celebrated b/w 12/26 to 1/1 first celebrated in 1966. It is only celebrated by a minority of African Americans. It has been criticized as ahistorical and a holiday purely contrived by its founder Karenga. It has no basis in African history and was invented by a black nationalist probably just to compete with Christmas and Hanukkah. I remember one of my junior high history teachers, an African American man, thought the holiday was a sham and had no actually reference to African or African-American culture.
