I always try to challenge myself to read more each year. I was just curious how many everyone read. I know we still have a few weeks left this year but make a close guess. Thanks

Amazingly, I have read about 25 books. Normally I don't have time.

After I read these answers, I really feel like I'm way too slow, but what can I do?

First of all, I read after working a full day and I am really exhausted - so I can read only 1 or 2 chapters at most. Then sometimes I read a bit more on the weekend, but not much more.

Also, many times I finish a book and because I loved it so much and I can't leave the characters, I reread it immediately.

Here's what I have read and maybe have reread as well:

The Red and The Black - Stendhal
The Devils - Dostoevsky
The Wings of the Dove - Henry James
Short Stories - Henry James
Oscar and Lucinda - Peter Carey
Journey to the East - Hesse
The ****** of Narcissus - Conrad
Swann's Way - Proust

Perhaps, I have read more, but I don't remember. Basically, I love to read literature and the classics and these do require more intense concentration.

My challenge not for the year, but for my whole life is to read as many classics as possible. The classics are the best and I do love them the most.

40 Books that have literary reverence like Wuthering Heights and Tess of the D'ubervilles Invisible Man by Ellison A prayer for Owen Meany and One who Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Madame Bovary and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Brave New World and Notes From the Underground and finally A Portrait of Dorian Grey

Not books like Twilight which just talks about vampire lovers and some other series that dont have any reason to be written only for the amusement of girl's and boy fantasies

I don't know in total for this year but I have kept count since my birthday (August 11th) since then I've read 32 books...but a total of 15,404 pages. I think it makes a difference when you keep a total number of pages because some people read a lot of short books so their numbers are inflated, I've read some really long books (1000 pages or more) which took longer. I could have read 2 or 3 books in the same time it took to read that 1.

Most often I've read about two books a week. I have trouble sleeping sometimes, but also really like to read.

How many that is in 2007 I have no idea, and that really shouldn't matter, because for some, reading five books in 2007 is a terrific accomplishment, and one they should be very proud of.

My hat's off to all readers.

EDIT: Like the others in their answers, I've also often read more than one book a day in spurts, particularly if I'm following a mystery series or other books easily read...

Still, I think that the number of books one reads is not a good measure of good reading.

Improvement in reading habits is the only measure one should take.
Agreed?

56 so far, but I could get in more before 2008 comes. I don't read fast just to make any number of books I've read high. I love reading, and I read at a leisurely pace for myself. I'm a slow reader really, but I read for entertainment more than watching movies. I don't often make goals for numbers. I do have a goal to read a book published in every year starting in 1800, but it's got no time limit, so I read a few for that goal every now and then.

I don't read very many books per year because I really only read in the summer. I also find it hard to find a book that i like. Sometimes i read only the first 2 chapters and then return the book to the library because it was boring. I really liked the book To Kill A Mockingbird. I have read it 3 times already, but I probably wouldn't have even picked it up if i wasn't forced to in the first place. But I am glad that I was forced to because i really enjoyed it.

well I'm a young teen so i dont have a lot of spare time after school and on weekends to read so I have to say 3-7 chapter books a month ranging from 200-800+ pages. Averaging that out I would have to say about 40 chapter books (I read a lot in the summer).

43 - 50. I personally feel that if you read too many more than this, you're not taking in as much as you can – it will become more of a competition than a learning experience.

I always lose count but I'm going to say around 300 if not more. I can read a book a day sometimes two if their small.
