The United States is a classic example of a confederate federal government.

Cuba is an example of unitary government because it is ruled by Fidel Castro.

Confederated Government would be a government unified over completely individual States, like the South in the Civil War. Federal Governments are over Federated States (ones who bind themselves to the over all country like ours). Unitary Governments are based on sects of people getting together to unite in one large group, like currently in Iraq.
