Do you ever get hate mail from people who think you should have chosen their answer as best?

I have once or twice.

Also once or twice I have gotten emails mentioning that the answer I picked was wrong, but not saying explicitly that I should have picked theirs.

This is always lots of fun for me because I can fire back a snappy response like:

"Oh, I did that on purpose. I am clairvoyant and I knew in advance how angry it would make you."

Alas, I have noticed, some people are not subtle enough to appreciate this kind of humor.

No. My confidence and self worth is not based upon how many points I've acquired on an online Q&A forum. It's difficult for me to imagine anyone taking Yahoo! Answers that seriously, but I suppose it isn't nonexistent.

The only reason I might be concerned is if a "Best Answer" was chosen where the answer actually incorrect when there are possible answers that were actually correct. Of course, this is only the case where there ARE in fact correct answers (like most questions in the "Science & Mathematics" category) and not just opinions (like most questions in the "Politics & Government" category).

Even then, it's not enough of a worry to send hate mail over it. I think of it as punishment to the questioner for not verifying the information given in the "best answer".

I’m mostly answerer, so I’ve never received soliciting mails. But sinner as I am, I answer sometimes this peculiar way:
