Somebody explain this to me????? Everything I read says tennessee is completly out if Pitt wins on thursday but from what I thought I had figured out thats not true......What if Cleveland wins out and wins the division....Pitt wins thursday but turns around and loses to Baltimore.......Tenn Wins out......SO both teams have the same record same conference record next is record against common opponets....This is where I get confused.....Pitt loss to jacksonville and tenn beat them the first game than lost the second time they played....SO if you take the first time they played them tenn is 2-2 against common opponets while Pitt would be 1-3 against common opponets giving tenn. the edge right........SOmeone please explain to me why this reasoning is wrong.......because everything I see says if pitt wins thursday tenn is out?

First of all, anyone talking about divisional record has no clue about tiebreaking procedures. Divisional record only matters if the two teams are IN THE SAME DIVISION.

If both end up 10-6 as in your scenario, then the next tiebreaker would be conference record, where they're both 7-5. It then goes to record against common opponents, assuming they've got at least four teams in common. If I'm reading it right, they've both played the Jags, Broncos, Bengals and Jets, with the Titans going 2-3 while the Steelers went 1-3.

According to that, the Titans would get the spot. I'm not sure, though, if that tiebreaker applies to common opponents within a team's own division. Even if it doesn't, though, the Titans would win out on the next tiebreaker, strength of victory, at least according to this article:

I hope that all makes sense.

Easy if they finish with the same record overall. the stellers still have the better division record then the titans do. Thus the titans are out steelers are in. So if the Steelers win on thursday the have assured themselves the same record as the titans worst case for them but a better division record overall. thats how now stop askign the question.

Tennesee isnt eliminated though, at least as far as I know. If Pittsburgh loses out and goes 9-7, and Tennesee wins out and goes 10-6, and Cleveland wins the AFC North, then the Titans take that final Wild Card spot, not the Steelers.

Tie breakers go:
Head to head
Record against teams within the division (if two teams from the same division are tied)
Record against other teams in the conference. I guess Pittsburgh has a better overall record against AFC teams.
