Nowadays psychologists (albeit not all of them, but a majority of them do) use shallow methods for curing their patients-to make them return more often and thus to gain more money out of their pockets.
I believe if psycholgists would treat their patients with the right the right and most effective theraphy, they would be cured in less than quarter the time.

(As an obssessive hand washer at least this is my personal experience and opinion, and I would be curious to know what you think of this issue)

I went to a see a social worker who did psychotherapy. I also went to a community health clinic. I got a slidding scale fee. Money isn't important to them obviously if your going to work for pennys.

There are people out there who care about people, who would get paid less, but get a great satification helping someone at the end.

I was only allowed 12 visits at this clinic. I made the most of it.

Your obession with your hands. Well, its good to talk to someone why we do things that we feel like we are out of control in our lives.

Best of Health.

I agree that some therapists prolong the relationship for financial gains...they have become "institutionalized".
I'm not sure anyone is "cured" from therapy...as long as we are alive, we will have "issues" because life happens on lifes terms..and we dont have a lot of control over much beyond our own attitudes and behaviors. (obsessive handwashing is a clear example of personal control taken to an extreme.)
The fact that you question this process gives me a lot of hope that you are on the right road to success in dealing with life on lifes terms.
Finally, as to the idea of "cure"...I believe a good therapist will help us find our own inner strength to deal with life long past the therapy sessions.

I think psychologists are like everyone else. They're human beings.
They can choose to be honest, or dishonest.
They can choose to be ethical, or not.
Some are more intuitive and talented then others, but may have chosen to be dishonest.

It's up to me to use my brain and stop going to someone if I'm getting warning signs. Psychologists, Doctors, bankers, professors, ect. They're all human beings and capable of great good and great evil.

Perhaps you need to find a psychologist that is trained in obsessive compulsive disorder and cognitive behavioral therapies.

Most psychologists do not want their patients to stay sick. They want them to get better.

Good luck.

i think it is true that some, not all but some psychologists are only out for money. the really good ones are more expensive, but they get the job done quicker, because they kno how to do their jobs. so, really, the better ones are cheaper in the long run. but, usually ppl get bamboozled because they take the cheaper ones and go back for years and years for nothing. thats wut i think of the situation.

Well, having a BA in psychology and having read Dianetics, my opinion of psychologists is poor.

But my opinion of them is a helluva lot higher than my opinion of psychiatrists!

Why do you ask?
