a wing man is a person that basically helps another person or their friend with relationships and advice. I think it can apply to both but I only hear guys use that term, girls just say their friend.

A wing man is basically a friend help you to "go in for the kill". For example my boyfriend will go and flirt with girls coming on really strong so that his friend can come in and seem like a saint. - Everyone does it differently but yes it applies to girls too.

Technically, a "wing-man" in fighter-jockey parlance is the guy (or even gal I suppose in our modern air force) that is glued to your wing during air-combat maneuvers to supply you with cover from the opposing force's fighters. In everyday use, it could mean somebody who's always by your side, and sticks with you through all the twists and turns of life.

Wing man is a term used in military flying groups, and is there to run interference for the lead plane, and yes, people on the prowl can have a wing man!!! (male or female)
