Smiley- I am aware of NI and it's history, you may have noticied that I am posting this in 'UK & Ireland' that may give a clue to you about my nationality. Just because someone wants to be one nationality and not the other does not change their nationality.
If it did, the world may be a bit of a confusing place in which to live.
Anyway, seeing as there are no great guitarists from Scotland, Wales or Ireland, maybe I should have asked: 'Who's your favourite English guitarist', the lists that answerers have produced would still be unchanged.

Johnny Marr for his sheer audacity for what he gets away with...an innovator and explorer of sounds that Jeff Beck embraced...the rest are stuck in the past of their own making...not that there's anything wrong with that....

I have many, but a few of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet are John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Peter Green, Ollie Halsall, Peter Banks, and Steve Hillage.

Edit -
The Spork - Jimi's recording career actually started in the good 'ol USA with people like Curtis Knight, The Isley Brothers, Little Richard, and eventually his own band, 'Jimmy James and The Blue Flames'. Some of the 'Curtis Knight' and 'The Blue Fames' recordings are great!
A few people have mentioned Gary Moore, and he's one of my favorite guitarists also. The only problem is he's Irish, not British.

Edit - Gary F -
regarding Gary Moore; The term "British" is acceptable, although has to be used with care and sensitivity in Northern Ireland, where one section of the community would be happy being so-described British, the other would most definitely regard themselves as "Irish". Gary and his family are of the "other". They have always wished unification with the Irish Republic. I think the proper term for where Gary hails from is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". I'm sure if asked, he would say he's Irish...not British.
Someone else mentioned Scott Gorham. Any aspiring 'Thin Lizzy' fan should know that he's American.

Yes, Yes, Yes! Every decent British guitarist has been covered. The usual suspects, Clapton, Page, Beck, Green, Moore, Iommi, Blackmore etc, and it's nice to see Kossoff, Barre and Fripp get mentions as they are often missed out in this kind of thing. However, one superb guitarist has been missed and that is Richard Thompson, what a technique.

By the way, Sabe99 seems to have got his/her guitarists mixed up with his/her drummers. Phil Collins indeed.

Joe Brown.A sixties guy who also plays a wicked mandolin and ukulele.Very under-rated as he also played as a backing musician for a lot of people.Anyone who has seen him live can testify to that.Have a listen to The Sound Of Fury album by Billy Fury to hear a great rock`n`roll guitarist.

Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple. Or Martin Barre, Jethro Tull.
And if you're including acoustic guitars, Gordon Giltrap.
