Does this mean I can only use dvd or cd-rw's? I'm having a problem with cd-r's and transferring pics.

The disk keeps getting kicked out and says "insert a recordable disk". I may just be using cheap cd's.

No that means the drive can play DVD's and can write to CD-RW's. However if a drive can do RW's it can always burn CD-R's as well. What's the problem with transferring pic?

It means you can only PLAY DVD's (not burn them) and you can use either CD-R or CD-RW

you can read DVD, and read/write CD's. if you load a blank cd-r does the drive recognise it? if yes, then it will record. if no, then try cd+r.
