Sweetie, you need to tell your parents that you are having trouble and let them either help you directly, or if they can't, let them get you a tutor. This is basic math that my fifth grade son did this year. If you are having trouble with this, you need to tell someone about it.

Use this equation:
(number of % / 100) * of = is
For example: 12% of 44 is what number. We know the percent (12), the of part is 44 and the "is" part is unknown. So rewrite the equation:
(12/100) * 44 = _____
(.12)*44=______
=5.28.
So 12% of 44 is 5.28.

Look at the next problem: 55 is 20% of what number. The percent is 20, the "is" is 55 and the "of" we don't know.
(20/100) * ___ = 55
We can rename the blank x, or just divide 55 by (20/100) to solve for the blank. I'll rename the blank x:
(20/100)*x=55
(20)*x=5500
20x=5500
x=275
So 55 is 20% of 275.

OK for the first one (and this is just how I would do it) take 44 and divide by 100. that way th number you are left with is 1% of 44 seeing as how multiplying by 100 will get 44 and 44 is 100% of 44. once you get 1% of 44 multiply by 12 to get 12%

as for 55. divide by 20 to get 1% of the whole number, them multiply by 100 to get 100% of the number.

I really hope that helps but I can't give you the answer! sorry! but I don't think you wanted it anyway

what is 12% of 44. multiply 44 by .12 for your answer

55 is 20% of what number. divide 55 by .20 for your answer

if the decimal is throwing you off in division, then here's a shortcut: remove the decimal from .20 and add 2 zeroes to the end of 55. so now you will be dividing 5500 by 20. To check that you have the correct answer: Multiply your answer by .20, it should equal 55.

1) 44 multiplied by 12%= 5.28
2)55=20 over 100=1 over 5
100%=55 multiplied by 5= 275

you multiply 44 times .12 to get the answer for the first one. Percent is a fraction or portion of a number, if looked at generally, so for example 10 % is 10 out of 100, therefore it would be .10 out of 1. As for the second one, just so 55/.2, the backwards way.

Stuff to remember:

1) A percentage is just moving the decimal point of the percent to the left twice, so 12% is really just 0.12.

2) Almost every time the word "is" is in a word problem, it generally means "equal to."

Your examples:

"12% of 44 is what number" translates to 0.12*44=?

"55 is 20% of what number" translates to 55=0.20*?

55 is 20% of 275. I just took .2 times an amount that is an even number and is a multiple of 5 because they both are multiples of 5. There is probably an easier way, but it works for me.

take .12 and multiply it by 44

=5.28

well, you just multiply the number with the percent...

so 12% of 44 would be:
44 x .12 which is 5.28

and 20% of 55 would be:
55 x .20 = 11

hope that helps.

0.12 x 44 to get the first one, because in order to convert a percentage into a decimal, you just move the decimal place two to the left.
answer should be 5.28

for the second one, there's two ways you can go about solving it
1. you know that 20% is equivalent to 1/5. so you multiply 55 by 5 to get what 55 is one fifth of.
2. 55=0.20 x___ So divide 55 by 0.2 to get the answer.
answer should be 275

hope i could help
