Dit Clapper of the Boston Bruins is probably the best 2 way player of all time. He was an allstar as a defense in 39, 40, 41, and 44. He was an allstar as a right wing in 31, and 35.
In 29 he scored 41 goals in 44 games (2nd overall in scoring), and was a player coach for 4 seasons, including a Stanley Cup win. This guy could do it all.

There has been a few.
No dirt: Dandenault is back playing forward this year and doing a decent job in a checking role.
Also with Montreal Mark Streit a defenseman played more forward than D last year and is playing both positions this year. When dressed as a forward he usually plays the point on the power play. In fact Montreal has 9 d-men on the roster now. Brisebois is hurt and the above two have been playing up front lately.

Red Kelly was an all-star defenceman for the Detroit Red Wings becoming the first ever winner of the Norris Trophy, and spent the last 6 years of his career as a centre for the Toronto Maple Leafs playing in several all-star games, becoming a top 10 scorer, and winning more Stanley Cups than any other player in the history of the game who didn't play for Montreal.
He's also a Hall of Famer and in 10 seasons as an NHL coach, only missed the playoffs once

The previous poster's right about Brylin. But the Devils also used to use Niedermyer as a forward at times as well (remember at one point, Niedermyer was the fastest skater in the league).

I'm sure there are more, but the only guy I can think of right now is Sergei Brylin. He's refered to as "the good soldier" because he'll play any position, except goalie cause he tried it and he's not to good. He's the hockey version of a utility player.

Unsure of in the past ,, however if you have been watching the flames , Keenan has put Phanouf in front of the net on power plays and on some shifts and it has worked out ok, he might be able to make the transition,, maybe,, he is a good player on the D but I like the experimenting keenan is doing.

federov fills in for D when needed. he played half of last season on the blueline.
there are several players around the league, belak, strudwick, etc that play forward and D. usually 4th line wingers, 6th/7th dman.
i cant think of anyone who has switched and was amazing though.
