I am in a precarious position. There is a distinct possibility that I will be laid off at the beginning of next year after 9 years with a company I like and I can't afford not not work. A relative at another company just got a promotion and sent the boss my resume. We had an interview that went well. I didn't expect to hear anything until after the holidays, but he called and made me an offer. Unfortunately the pay is considerably less that what I am making now. The health insurance benefits are terrible. If I knew for sure that I was going to lose my job, I would definitely take this for the short term, but I since they want an answer now, I am inclined to turn it down.

How do I turn down this offer without burning this bridge? I still have the relative who did me this favor and who knows where I'll be in another couple of weeks?

I would them if you could wait until after the holidays to give them an answer. If they want an answer immediately, then politely say 'I didn't expect such a prompt response, I have another situation that probably won't be resolved for a couple more weeks, so I have to decline for now.' Something to that effect.

I believe you should really explain the entire situation to the hiring boss.

If he truly believes you're the right person for the job, he may wait a couple months. I'm certain he understands the situation.

Upon explaining the lower pay and benefits, it maybe possible that this declined offer may turn into a somewhat of a negotiation and the hiring boss may up the offer.

Lay the whole thing out for your current employer as well. Maybe you will be not be laid off as you believe, and maybe this new offer may drive him to up your pay or benefits.

Send them a very polite letter thanking them for the offer and say that you have to decline it at this time because the offer doesn't match your experience, knowledge of the job and your pay requirements.

Thank them, tell them you appreciate teh offer, but you wen't aware your resume was going to be considered; if so, you would have advised them you won't be a vailable untill..... (whatever date you find reasonable) and ask if you can touch base with them again at that time if they would be interested.

Thank them politely for the time and effort, and tell them you will not be able to make a decision until such and such a date.
