This is my first laptop. I'm so used to desktop that I'm a little confused. I want to download Itunes, Frostwire and other programs that I had on my desktop. I don't want to transfer files because my old desktop has hidden viruses. What firewalls can i setup to ensure my new laptop is virus/spyware/spam free.

A firewall doesn't protect a computer from viruses/spyware/trojans etc. what you need is a Virus scanner. best atm is Kaspersky.
you can also download free Antivirus programs like AVG or Avast!

Why don't you scan the areas on your desktop that contain the files data that you want to copy. Then copy them to disk and rescan the disks. Then copy them over using the disks as the transfer medium.

Didn't your 1720 come with a 15 month subscription to McAfee???

If you want to have good protection, here's my recommendations:

AVG Antivirus - FREE
Spy Sweeper - $29.95 1st year, $19.19 afterwards
AdAware - FREE
Spybot Search & Destroy - FREE
CCleaner - FREE
and a registry cleaner - FREE at http://www.download.com

I run those and haven't had a problem in a long time.

Hope this helps.
