Presidents are NOT elected based on the general populas voting. They are Elected by the Electoral College and every state has a certain number of those votes. The process is outlined here:

It has always been one of my pet peeves that people still believe this is a Popularity contest....grrr

It basically IS a popularity contest. Politicians say what they need to in order to win votes. That's why I hate them.

Probably because it IS! Seriously, when does the UNPOPULAR candidate win? Of course we all have our own versions of what that is, but whoever wins has to have the most votes, hence the most popularity. Not necessarily a majority, mind you, but the most, nevertheless.

C B is right. It is a popularity contest. He who spins the best brand of B.S wins.

Because it is. That is what democracy and elections are. The most popular wins (usually). This is really a silly question.

Because at least partly, it is. People tend not to vote for candidates who do not connect with them. It's one of the reasons Hillary Clinton is running "warm and fuzzy" ads in Iowa.

Unfortunately it is. Money matters too. I don't know how people can let it come down to that. Can't people think for themselves? I'm voting for Dennis Kucinich. I think he is the best candidate out there for the people.

In theory, it is supposed to be. And the popularity is supposed to be based on how good a job you thing they will do, and if they represent you the best.

It is. It's the definition of Democracy. The person who gets the most votes- just like your prom queen. And all her friends vote for her.
