this society, like most is based around work but why is it that so many people are bitter about being required to work? there is no legal obligation to work and work reduces social problems - it is therefore a good thing so why the bitterness?

it steals at least half of your lifetime away, when you could be doing much better things.

for many people its little else than get up in the morning, go to work, do repetitive tasks for hours and then come home.

i don't know for sure but it seems a growing number of people are becoming discontented with this idea.

I'm a mature person and have worked without a break for 40 years, and still have a few years to go. I think people are bitter about work because it simply takes up so much of your time, and that there are better things to do. However, one of my best mates works only 2 days a week because he has managed to organise his life in such a way that he can live very simply, and very cheaply. He doesn't claim benefits, he just manages on what he has. The most bitter people I know are the ones who don't want to work, but who also want a house, a car, holidays, money in the bank ... But also, a lot of work is not that rewarding, and many employees find that they are exploited by their employers (or they think they are). And some work hardly seems worth doing, but it brings in a bit of money to keep the wolf from the door. Society is in a right mess. I work the best part of 60 hours a week in care homes, nursing homes, hospitals, etc and I love the work, but if I go for a drink after work and those horrible big plasma TV screens are on I see terrible things - footballers, musicians, etc being paid HUGE amounts of money for doing something which (to me) contributes nothing to the benefit of society. I SHOULD be bitter about working, but I'm not.

People who have no family role models in the area of work are likely to present with the characteristics you have described.

Generations of parents and relatives have survived on hand-outs from the tax-payer, and have had no incentives to help themselves, for as long as money was paid to them freely and without a push into jobs of any kind.

Attempts by society and the government to instill a sense of self-worth in such people only draw resentment from them due to a lack of basic understanding of how the benefits they receive are generated, and where they come from. This is one of the great failures of the Welfare State system that will take another fifty years to remedy.

A lot of people are bitter because they chose jobs based on what thier parents wanted, or what other people suggested rather than listen to what they wanted for themselves. Now they are stuck in a job they didn't really want, and don't feel like they can afford to leave for whatever reason.

I think a lot of jobs available now carry very little sense of accomplishment. As in, you can't see how you're benefiting anything. If you work an office job this is especially true: you're pushing papers all day and don't see the benefit of your work. The most physically exhausting jobs - construction, farming, etc. tend to have happier workers because you can SEE the results of all your hard work.

Oh, I complain about my job, too, but I'm not bitter about it. It enables me to buy what I want and not just rely on my husbands income. So, there are two days i really love my job -- the 1st and the 15th of every month.

It depends if you 'work to live' or 'live to work'. British work more hours per week than any other developed country. I personally resent the time I have to spend working when I should actually be living my life.

cos most people arent in a fortunate enough position to enjoy their job.

Those who are will probably never complain, but those who arent are always gonna complain.

Its a fact of life unless you are a millionaire you are going to need to work, so you may as well enjoy it.
