I would like to learn to play guitar but have not touched the instrument since grade 8 music class. So ?!?

I wonder what are some of most efficient and effective ways to learn ?
If anyone could get my bowl rolling, that would be wonderful !

First, go to a music store and have the salesclerk help you pick out a guitar that is comforatable for you to play... there is nothing than can spoil the experience more than a guitar that is hard to play... so NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy any guitar you haven't played first.

There are some excellent courses available for learning the guitar. The one that seems to get the best reviews is "Learn and master Guitar" by Legacy learning systems.. but it's not cheap.

Other than that... practice, practice and practice... if you aren't prepared to devote at least 30 minutes a day several days a week to learning to play the guitar, then don't bother even starting.

Lose the DVD's and software- if you really want to play, find some group lessons at a local nonprofit community music school or community college You're much better off there than the half-hour at the superstore from the metalhead who's in between bands. The instructors at the music schools usually have degrees in the field, and the lessons are usually less than what you'd pay at guitar center.
The real advantage of group lessons is that since you are in with a group of students at about your ability, you can set up jam sessions outside of class. Having one or more partners can mean the difference between abandoning it after three months or taking your playing as far as you can. Remember - music is a social activity- if you're sitting alone in your room, you probably won't go very far- Good Luck!
