I'm not trying to break into a car, fyi! It's just that I think I might've seen someone breaking into someone else's car!

There are two kinds that I know of:
One is called a slim jim and is a thin piece of metal with notches in the sides to catch the locking mechanism inside the door to pop it open.
The other kind is called a break in bar and is a long round rod about 3/8" thick. This is put through an opening or into the door seal to catch the lock from the inside of the car and open it. This method can be bad since the bar is so thick it can seriously scratch and damage your vehicle.

a slim jim is a flat piece of long metal that fits between the glass and the door frame and has several notches for pulling or pushing the locking rod, the other is a spring loaded center punch that can fit in your pocket or glove box, and just pushing it against the glass until it clicks the window will shatter, (except windshield) what you use is dependant on the urgency of entry or egress.
