The historical resistance of the brave and freedom loving Afghans against the Red Army and their puppet Communist regime, and its impacts on the free world and how it helped America:
1. The biggest enemy of the U.S. (Capitalism), the Soviet Union (Communism, Marxism-Leninism) was defeated and humiliated in Afghanistan.
2. The Afghans' struggle and sacrifices led to the freedom of Central Asian Republics and facilitated the reunification of West and East Germany, and the freedom of Eastern European nations.
These achievement would never be dreamed of if Soviet had succeeded in Afghanistan. The world would be completely different today.
3. Afghans didn't "turn" on the U.S., but Pakistanis, al-Qaeda Arabs, Iranians, the U.S. and NATO did turn on Afghanistan.
A CIA agent once put it like this: "It was our gold and the Afghans' blood."
Afghanistan is the biggest victim of the Cold War, however, ironically and unfortunately it is not the winner of the Cold War.

After the departure of Soviet forces, the US lost interest in Afghanistan and didn't realy help rebuild the war-ravaged country or influence events there
with all the chaos of the post-soviet afghanistan, the Taliban was welcomed with open arms!!
Read the Kite Runner... very good novel about the Soviet ruled afghanistan and what happened after the Taliban took over... it has also been made into a movie... haven't seen the movie but the book is awesome.. made me cry

They helped the US fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. After the Soviets left and the war was "won", those fighters felt that they were the ones responsible for winning the war and that they were the ones who "saved" the country.
Unfortunately, the US claims that they only helped and that they were the ones who are actually responsible for winning the war and liberating the country.
Of course, the fighters got mad. Add that anger coupled with the US's dominance in Middle Eastern Affairs (i.e. trying to influence and control oil-producing countries) and you've got yourself a terrorist organization bent on taking revenge.

By fighting against Communist Russia who invaded them. Afghanistan didn't turn on the US, the Taliban took over full rule and they attacked America. Afghanistan is a friendly nation, Taliban apart.

The taliban was trained by the CIA to take on the USSR. They engaged them and held them in a prolonged war, draining the Soviet Economy.
We trained them to be Jihadists... and when life "went back to normal" they didn't have anything normal to do (the war ran the nation down.. way down)... so they remained Jihadists.... and.. being trained to take on Super Powers... can you think of a better target than the US?
Seriously though... it's our use of Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War that pissed them (specifically Bin Ladin) off the most, bringing about many of the terrorists attacks since then.

They helped us regain control of the opium trade from the Russians in that region, until the Taliban came in and started shutting it down based on their religious beliefs and disrupting our profits. hence, we went in to clear out the little buggers and quantity and profits are now at a all time high again. Business is good again. Thanks Afghans! and thanks George.

Who ever told you or where ever you read that piece of information, it's simply not true... Unless you consider Afghan's keeping the Russian's busy they've received more help from us in the eighties that we from them.
