Yes , of course you have to.
If the cheque (check) has the payees name on it the bank will work it out.

Deposit $1 today and withdraw $1000 tomorrow.

Oh so you have xxxx of her social security number as well. Hard to believe your intentions are honourable.

I doubt they'll do this because they will need to give you a receipt for the deposit and the receipt will have to have that person's account number on it in case something goes wrong with the deposit. Even though you have the last four digits of the person's social security number, their giving you that receipt with the account number would be a privacy breach because there is no way that they can confirm that you even had the account number to begin with.

However, if they do allow you to do this...post back about it so I can close my account with them. I would want to know that my bank is letting that sort of thing slip by.

You will still be able to, just tell them you want to deposit it in John Does account his address is blah and the last four of his ss # is 1234. You just cant get any cash back. I've had to do this for may people when the guys I worked for were out of town.

As for the poster above me, they do not give you the reciept. They will mail it to the account holders home address.

Probably, they usually don't question deposits too much.
I often do that for my daughter. I go into the bank and say I want to deposit this check in my daughter's account and they ask do you know the account number and I say no but her name is ******* and they do it.

Sounds fishy to me...why can't the person named on the cheque deposit to their own account.?
