I know most people overload the washer and pour in lots of detergent but thats not how to clean the clothes. I always put less items in and less detergent allowing the rinse cycle to remove all of the soap. I also use "20 mule team borax" it's in the detergent aisle.

Below is another suggestion
I had it explained to me by an appliance repairman

Try Oxyclean or the Clorox brand of oxy cleaner. I don't think they are good on stain removing, but they definitely help with odor in the laundry! I've washed out pet smells, soiled kids clothes, my husband's dirty nasty stuff.......Oxyclean and the Clorox oxy stuff have worked every time!

If you don't like Oxyclean, or you don't want to buy a tub for just a few towels, try putting some vinegar in with the wash. Or, pre-soak the towels in the tub or sink with a cup or two of vinegar. Then ring out and run them through the regular wash. Vinegar can be so amazing. My sister bought a car that reaked of smoke. We put bowls of vinegar on the floor in front of every seat and left them there over night. The next day, the car was almost smoke free. New vinegar and a second night and you really couldn't tell the car had every smelled!

If it's warm enough where you are, you might want to hang them out to dry. Air drying can help get bad smells out, too.

DO NOT try to cover the smell with fabric softener... that is just wrong... in fact, you really shouldn't use fabric softener on towels at all.

To get rid of this smell is very simple. Add one cup of ammonia to your regular detergent in the next wash load. Wash in hot water and dry immediately.

Problem solved.

I always use "OdoBan" on all of my smelly things... it even takes out the smell of mold. Great stuff! I just pour a small amount into the washing machine along with my regular detergent etc. and it works its magic. I usually find it in Sams Club, but I assume you could get it other places.

I just looked it up and on http://www.odoban.com/ you can look up "product locator" and you can put in your state and it'll tell you where you can get it.
