I think they can OR I think our bodies can sometimes hide the truth from ourselves. I've been taking a pregnancy test (over the counter urine test) once a week since I missed my period in November. Every single one of them has come up negative. I went to the doctor and he performed a urine test that also came up negative along with a blood test that came up negative. I convinced him to do an internal exam and also told him it had been a while since my last pap smear and lo and behold, he looked at my cervix and said, "Uh, I think you may be pregnant."
Well, duh. But, since I had only received negative results from the pregnancy tests, it was still kind of a shock. In fact, I insisted that I couldn't be pregnant because surely a test would have come back positive by now. So, for the time being I am pregnant but the doctor wants me to see a specialist to see why I'm not testing positive.
I've been told that it's much more common to get a false negative than it is to get a false positive.
Peace,
Jenn

They can't "lie," but they can be wrong. If the hormone levels are not high enough to indicate a positive (too soon into the pregnancy), the test will come out as a "false" negative. A blood test is the most accurate way to determine pregnancy.

yes, a pregnancy can show up on a HPT but end before you miss a period (this is statistically higher than most people believe) and it can also give you a false negative if it is from a bad batch or if the chemicals haven't had enough time to build up in your system. If you get a negative but still think you're pregnant take another test in a week.

Yea, they can be false. There are only what like 98% accurate. So if you really think you're pregnant but keep on getting negative test results or visa versa then I would go to the doctor and get a blood test. That will tell you for sure. Good luck!

Yes, it's quite common to get a false negative. Sometimes there just isn't enough hcg in your system yet.
More rare, but still possible is a false positive. I'm not sure why they happen, but if you get a positive and don't believe it, take another test the next day. It is almost impossible to have 2 false positives.
Good luck.

You can get results that are not right. You need to take the test just has the directions say. Most of the time it will not clearly say positive unless you are pregnant. It is more common to get a false negative.

They can..did you get a negative or a positive??
It's more unlikely to get a false positive than a false negative. If you got a negative and still think that you are pregnant, it may be too early for your hcg to be in your urine.
If you aren't set on what result you got, get a blood test done, they are very accurate.

Yes. Sometimes if you take a pregnancy test too early, it wont detect accurate. It's best if you can take a home pregnancy test if your period is late. Also, for it to be very very very accurate, test when you first wake up. That way its the first urine of the day and its way better because it can detect the hormone better. good luck. *baby dust*
