I don't want to speculate on latest models, etc...
As a teacher, I would trust nothing but Mac. The school's computers are almost always down with viruses, and as a teacher, I have NO time to wait for some tech to get the network running again. I have never had a problem with my Mac, even when transferring from computers that have been infected with viruses. Also, Windows XP works GREAT on my MacBook Pro.
I know everyone wants the newest system, but unless you will be running games, you won't have any discernible wait-time with any of the Core 2 Duo Macs.
If they will soon be releasing the new models, then they will be clearing out the older models. You may get a good deal on one of last year's models.

Well, with the current line of MacBooks and MacBook Pros, you can also run Windows XP or Vista on it as well, which in my opinion, makes it more versatile. You can use whatever system you need without using two different physical machines. Regardless of which computer you buy, technology changes so rapidly, that within three months, something newer, faster, better, etc. has been released. It is just one of those unavoidable facts.
If you want lightweight, portable, and aren't doing a whole lot of heavy video and graphics work, a MacBook will probably work just fine. However if you intend to do those types of things (especially HD Video), get a MacBook Pro. They cost a lot more than the regular MacBooks, but deliver a whole lot more performance out of the box.
Oh, and if you can swing it, consider the AppleCare extended warranty, as laptop parts and service can be expensive, should you happen to run into any problems.
Hope this helps. Have fun with your new Mac!!

No. Not the 15". If you're stuck on getting a Macbook Pro get the 13" basic model. That's what I'm planning on getting for college. It's the cheapest way to get all the features of the Macbook Pro. The 15" is just too expensive and not worth the extra cost.

Have your folks get you a Gift Card for Apple. That way you can wait until after MacWorld and see what new and fantastic things they will come out with. Also, you could order on line thru the Apple store and get an education discount. Sometimes they bundle things together in the education store and you get a small discount. The new Macs also run Windows, but then who would want to.

Laptop...the word is laptop. It is small enough to hold on your lap, not your lab!
I have not had any problems with Vista. People just like to complain about new things. Personally, I think you would be better off with a Windows based laptop than an Apple. Apple's look cool, but most of the students who have problems at my school (I teach a a state university in Arizona) are using Apple computers. Most of the school help desk employees use Windows equipment and don't know how to help with Apple computers.

Macbook is good for the future, but if you could be patient just a leedle bit and wait, there's a "Macworld Expo" coming up real soon, and rumors of new models coming out with new bells and whistles! If you're curious, see this Ars and Technica article: http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/12/17/analysts-exurberant-about-macworld-expo

Most software is usually biased towards PC's. I have an asus F3SV-X1 off of newegg.com and got another gig of ram for it. It's only 1100 right now and I use it for everything. I got XP working on it and its great. If you get a mac don't plan on playing many video games.

If you can hold out for the new models, that's fine.
But you might investigate a refurbished Macbook from Apple.
In either case, just so you know ... 45.8% of American college students are now buying Macbooks.

Do NOT get a Mac especially if you are going to college. Most colleges run on PC only and it can be hard to convert from one thing to the other. I highly recommend the SONY Viao laptops with Pentium processors, I have one that I paid $1400 for about 5 years ago and it still runs like brand new and it lasted me through all 4 years of college.
