It was called the Tower of Babel. It was so named because it was in the city of Babel, which was founded by the man Nimrod.

God confused the languages of everyone in the city, making man spread out. This was the beginning of the formation of nations.

I find it very funny to see what the meanings of those words have become today. That Bible story (which I will say I believe to be true) has in some ways influenced our language in what we say.

Babel's tower. it was built by people who suffered the consequences of starting to speak different languages, so that they couldn't understand each other in the end and then they were never able to finish the tower

Tower of Babel, which God found offensive, making all the people speak different languages...thus, people babble when you can not understand them.
