not completely quantum, more as a rather of chance and philosophy:

Is it possible for an alien race to be millions of years ahead of humanity to be able to produce a nova explosion?

just reading a news story about a bright explosion a few billion light years away where there was relatively nothing- science fiction yes, but food for thought

Isaac Asimov (old scifi writer) put progress into categories of control. Control your area of land - primitive. Control your state - you need transportation and communications - this would be a "native American" level of progress.

Control your country - you need fast transportation, speed of light communication, politics, etc.

Asimov continued his list to local star, the solar system, galactic arm, galaxy. To a sufficiently advanced society, a nova or super nova may just be a way of making raw materials (heavier elements) for their society to consume. Or they might be weapons to exert their control.

Hi. Check out a "Dyson Sphere" for a better understanding of advanced technology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_sphere Asimov rules! Met him at a Science Fiction convention is Boston more years ago than I want to admit. And yes, he was very cool.
