My son just turned 5 months old on the 14th and has never been sick.
Today at 4am he woke up to eat and after about 20 minutes he started crying a little so I burped him and he projectile vomited all over our bed. He's spit-up before, but this is the first time he has ever actually thrown up. There was such a mess my husband and I had to relocate to the guest bedroom for the rest of the night until I could wash the bed covers this morning.
Around 8am when I woke up, while I was in the shower my son had diarrhea that was very very watery and runny (he never got a fever.)
I have never given him anything other than breast milk, now the doctor told me to give him Pedialyte.
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever given their baby, as young as 5 months old, Pedialyte? And how did they react?

I haven't given him anything since his morning feeding around 8am and that was only about 2 oz of milk. Then he had the diarrhea.
He's been sleeping ever since we came home from the doctor :(

It's been a really rough morning for the little guy, he had a blow-out in his swing that he loves to relax in and now the swing pad is in the washing machine.
I have him sleeping next to me, propped up on a giant bean bag covered with blankets.
He's never been sick before and he doesn't want to eat :(
It's 1pm and he's usually had at least 3 feedings by now.
I feel so helpless.
I really want to try the Pedialyte like the doctor suggested, but do you think it will make him sicker?
I don't want to make his tummy feel any worse :(

I'm also going to give him a small dose of Infant Tylenol when he wakes up.

Oh! for those of you who have used the Pedialyte, which flavor did your baby (at this age) like??
They had orange and grape, I got the orange.

Jackson just got over the stomach flu and it sounds just like what Landon has right now. He had it about 2 weeks ago and I know several other babies that have had it as well. I did give Jackson pedyalite in the orange flavor. Sometimes I did put a little bit of purified water in it to water it down a little (cause I didn't care much for the strong fruit flavor) but I don't think it's completely necessary. My doctor also said it was ok to give him Pedyalite as well. I'd say go for it and it's a good thing to keep him hydrated!

My son has those spells more than every now and then. U never know w infants but if the pediatrician said it...i would give it a try. He could be teething, something u had for dinner in his breast milk, only HE knows. But my son always refuses to eat...the pedialyte in my parenting experience helps. For whtever reason causing ur little man to bring it all up...the pedialyte can help see through it while nurishing his little body w fluids and nutrients from not eating. YOU DO NOT want him to become dehydrated unless u want to stay over at the hospital. If its something in the milk...it runs through while on the pedialyte...if it starts again then u have a clue. As adults, we wouldnt drink milk on a sour stomach...talking about a hard and painful time...aggghhhh!
Oh and for flavors..lol...ur baby would probably drink either..i have used all kinds so i would leave it to u...P.S. he will probably still have the diarrhea...and since u purchased orange...its a great chance that will be the color of his little stinky!!!

poorlittleguy!

I have not given pedialyte to mine (haven't had the need to) but he probably will have the reaction like "what is this??" with that confused look they get when you give them something new. Mine has a milk allergy and reflux, so when I gave her the zantac she had a weird look on her face.

Anyway, the pedialyte will help with dehydration and hopefully make him feel better. I hope it goes away soon, and his swing cleans up well so he can relax in it again =)

Awww...poor little guy. When I have given my baby pedialyte she loves it. You can try it, it taste kinda like gatorade only a lot better. I hate gatorade. My daughter was given pedialyte when when she was sick and in the hosiptal at about two months old. Hope he gets feeling better soon, I know it is rough with a sick one.

It is OK to give him Pedialyte. You surely don't want him to end up in the hospital from dehydration. I just hope he will drink it. My daughter refused to drink it when she had a stomach virus. The pediatrician suggested that we shake up popsicles in a cup with the pedialyte to make it taste better. We used sugar free 100% juice popsicles. I hope your son feels better. I know how hard it must be on you.

He will be fine having pedialyte. I had to give my little girl it when she was 2 1/2 months old because she was so sick she refused to eat and again when she was hospitalized due to her asthma in september (she was 9 months old then). She has done fine with both times and it actually is similar to giving them water only it help hydrate them better becuase of the elctrolytes in it. Go ahead and give him some....it will help re-hydrate his little body after having put out so much more than he has taken in.
Good Luck, Momma_Bear

Yes, Pedialyte is good, do what the Doctor said. My daughter had it when she was practically a newborn.

They may fuss a bit, but they need their liquids and the Electrolytes which Pedialyte gives them.

pedialyte is fine for little guys, it's a lot better than giving juice or koolaid. Try to give it between feedings though, instead of at feeding time, as in it should be replacing the fluids he's losing but not acting as a meal replacement, he still needs the nutrients from the breatmilk.
