e.g. If 31hours 36 minutes is 31.60 expressed as a decimal (is that right?!), then what is 24hours 24minutes as a decimal? And what is 4hours 52minutes? A simple sum so I can work it out would be great!!

Remember that fractions and decimals are different ways of expressing a quotient, and a quotient is the result of a division problem. For example,
1÷2 = ½
and
1÷2 = 0.5
so
½ = 0.5
Same value, different form. ½ is converted into decimal by using long division.
------------------
To express 36 minutes as a fraction of an hour,
36 minutes * (1 hour/60 minutes) = 36/60 hour
Notice how the minute units cancel out, leaving the answer expressed in hours. After doing the long division you get
36 minutes = 0.60 hour
Do the same for 24 minutes:
24 * (1/60) = 24/60 = 0.4
Do the same for 52 minutes:
52 * (1/60) = 52/60 ≅ 0.87

Hours + Minutes/60
For example:
31 + 36/60 = 31 + 6/10 = 31.6
Or:
24 + 24/60 = 24 + 2/5 = 24.4
Now you try it:
4 + 52/60 = ??

there are 60 mins per hour, so just divide the number of minutes by 60 and get the decimal equivalent, so 4hrs 52 mins = 4+52/60=4.8667 hrs

the decimal is the number of minutes divided by 60 :)
so 24 hours 24 minutes
is 24 hours and...
24/60 = 0.4
so 24 hours 24 minutes is 24.4 hours

in this case think of the decimal as a percentage that you're looking for. Take the part you're looking for divided by the whole, so take your minutes / 60[the whole] and you'll get your answer.
Hope this helps!!
