Here’s a guarantee way more accurate than Pittsburgh safety Anthony Smith’s that the Steelers would beat the Patriots.

For the remainder of this season, the title of "America’s Team" is officially on loan, from Dallas to New England.

Until New England loses a game -- if it loses a game -- the Patriots are "America’s Team."

Anyone who follows football now follows the Patriots the way it would a hometown team, waiting to see whether New England can get past the best teams of this year and the 1972 Miami Dolphins of yesteryear.

There are those who root for the Patriots, those who root against them, but no one can deny that everyone is watching them. Everyone.

From here on, they tune in to see when Tom Brady throws five more touchdown passes to pass Peyton Manning and make him the NFL’s all-time single season touchdown passing king.

They track whether Randy Moss can reel in four more touchdown receptions and the NFL’s all-time single-season touchdown catch record that now belongs to Jerry Rice.

They monitor New England's assault of history and the pursuit of perfection. The Patriots next two games are football’s version of slam dunks.

After the Jets comes a Dolphins team as imperfect as New England is perfect. So put it down now -- 15-0, leaving a Saturday night game in Giants Stadium, on NFL Network, as the lone remaining obstacle between 16-0 and history.

No longer is it a question of whether the Patriots will go 16-0. The more pertinent question is whether they will go 19-0. And maybe their biggest obstacle is the team from which they have borrowed a title.

If and when the Patriots and Cowboys square off in Glendale, Ariz. -- in what would be the best winning percentage two Super Bowl teams have ever combined to have -- they would be playing for a title way more meaningful than "America's Team."

I am a born and raised Pats fan of 27 years. The Pats are NOT "America's Team".Never will be unless they suddenly win the next 4 super bowls ending the decade then maybe you can say that but highly doubt that. but what is true is that whether you hate them or like them everyone is indeed watching them to a certain degree, whether it be the whole team, the coach or a player or two, especially those who play fantasy football. I mean face it if you had Moss, Brady, and Seymor on your fantasy football team, you would keep them after how well they haver played.

The only American thing about them is their Name and Mascot which when the team was formed back in 1960 needed every teams approval. The name and Mascot do indeed symbolize America in the way it reminds us of the Revolutionary War. Other than that its Dallas still.

Honestly, who cares what Adam Schefter calls the Patriots, or any other media calls them for that matter. Just watch the games and form your own opinions. As far as the "America's team" title goes, I personally don't care, Schefter could have called them "New Mexico's Team" and it wouldn't have affected what I think of them.

Too many people here and elsewhere put a big emphasis on what the media says and does. I have 2 eyes, a brain and an internet connection. Therefore, I can review the stats, watch the games and form my own opinions without someone else's opinions.

The title of "America's team" is owned by the Cowboys. It's not for lease and it's not for sale. Even if it was, the Patriots would at the most be known as "America's 2nd team". They would have to be dominant for at least the next 2 decades to catch up to the Cowboys. The Packers will never be America's team because they are the Cheeseheads. Just like the Steelers are the Iron Curtain. You can't take a title from a team that owns it. Besides, the only time I see people holding up "America's Team" banners is at Cowboys games. It is what it is, deal with it.

I am in agreement with this article and think it was VERY well put together....my only opinion out of this is how much MORE i hate Charter Communications and the rest of the cable companies that dont have NFL network....first it was the Dallas/Green Bay game.....now, in what could be the single most important game in NFL modern history, only DirectTV subscribers can watch it (in my area anyway).....cant even get it on ESPN360 online....I think it is time for us as the viewing public to step up and make a stand against WHOEVER is at fault here, whether its the NFL or the cable companies....WHOS WITH ME?!?!

The Patriots are NOT America's team. 90% of Americans hate them.

The Patriots are America's team. The Patriots are defined by a "team ONLY" mentality, where the good of the team is the only thing that matters, and anyone who disagrees is quickly shown the door (bye-bye Deion Branch and company).

The definition of American Strength is that despite our country's diverse makeup and social problems, we unite when the "game" is on the line, and that unity is our strength. In essence, a team mentality. That's why the Patriots are America's Team.

Dallas was America's Team because they won. This country may have a history of winning, but it's not - and never has been - the winning that defines us.

I liked Shefter better when he worked for the Denver Post.

But I think he's got a point here. It seems that everyone has an opinion on the Patriots and everyone wants to be aware of what's happening with them. I personally can't stand them but have to respect what they're doing. As for the majority of their "fans".....well that's a different story altogether.

The "America's Team" title is and always has been a joke to me.
