Don't spend money on an anti-virus, save it and buy some RAM if all you have is 256MB on a Windows XP machine it has to be slower than s**t up your RAM to 2GB (2048MB) or at minimum 1GB (1024MB).
So to answer your original question. Best anti-virus Trend Micro, MacAfee, Norton, AVG, Panda and there are a few others.

nod32 is the worlds best by far in detection rates and easy to use its only 15mb about a 3rd of the size of other i have used avg, avira,avast,panda,kapersky,norton,webmd,and macaffe and im not satisfied with them i have ued nod32 for a long time but have tried other and so far i like nod32 the best its a very small download. you can use their trial version as much as u want if u don't want to buy it and its perfect.

TRY NOD32 or Avast these are the antivirus softwares that suit your computer, which won't be tough on your computer as well.
