My hamster sniffs my thumb when it is climbing out of it's cage onto my hand although I normally just hold a flat surface so it can climb out onto that. Is my hamster about to bite me? Also when I'm holding Mr. Tubby (he's a bit on the round side) he sniffs my fingers but he's sniffs the side of them when I'm holding my hand flat. Is he about to bite me? I'm scared of my hamster, and I feel really bad about it; I just want to be able to hold him without that fear, is there anything I can do with him to help him gain my trust. When he sniffs me I get this feeling of nausea then I put him on the floor straight away. I think I need to trust him more as welll as he needs to trust me. Can anyone help! Thanks.

To answe your question, you know you can tell whether someone is watching you? Well it's like that but with thinking that ny hamster is going to bite me. I know he probably isn't it's just something I need to work on.

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the hamster. This way you'll be sure that he won't nip you because of something tasty you may have touched before touching him. He's just sniffing to figure out if you're ok, if you've got something yummy to eat, and you're not going to do something horrible to him. Most hamsters don't bite unless provoked, so just be gentle with him. And DON'T be scared....animals can sense fear and anxiety and it makes them uptight; to avoid making him nervous, you should be as calm as possible.

He probably is not going to bite, he is just sniffing out the territory. Any animal can tell if you are afraid of them though. So, let him sniff, then go ahead and handle him, get him used to it.

I'm confused what gives you the impression his trying to 'bite' you? His just sniffing you, to get familiar with your scent.

He is smelling your hand to see where he is, he may bite if you spook him, but not hard.
