Why start back up if you made such a great commitment the past 9 months. That itself is a big accomplishment.

..First off I know how hard it is to quit! BUT look at all the people who have! You feel better, you smell better! If you went the whole pregnancy without smoking, then you can definately stop...you'll get those urges of course...but you don't want to raise your son/daughter around cigarette smoke...second hand smoke, and also just being a good role model. Chances are if your a smoker your kids are going to be, not always but the percentage is up there. If you need a cigarette just cut back to a couple a day, then gradually wean yourself off..if its cold turkey, or with gum/patch! Good Luck! It's something to think about, as if not everyone else has been on your case about it! *Obviously don't smoke around the baby. If your breastfeeding you definately shouldn't smoke. But you really can start back whenever.

oh, come on! try to stay off them, you had to go thru so much to quit, why start back up???

but, as soon as you have the baby, if not breastfeeding it can only get second hand smoke (which can linger in your hair & clothes, btw, even if you step outside as i'd assume you would)

there's conflicting studies about breastfeeding & smoking--talk to a doctor & lactation consultant about that. many say that breastfeeding is better, even if you do smoke, & ESP if you smoke around the baby. ["Women who smoke may breastfeed, but should be encouraged to quit smoking" (3) "If a mother consumes less than fifteen cigarettes each day, the risk to the baby from transmitted nicotine in the breast milk is quite small." (2)]

You really shouldn't start back up smoking because the smoke will stay on you even though you wash your hands. But if you really feel you need to smoke I would say at least a week. My friends have smoked through the whole pregnancy and their babies are fine. But if you have stopped smoking and haven't smoked for awhile why would you want to start back up? I would rather spend that extra 5 or 6 dollars on the baby. It's up to you though.

Why would you go back to smoking?

You obviously quit and that is awesome! Do you know that your lungs are already starting to heal themselves from all the damage you inflicted on them?

Not to mention the fact that smoking can lead to your child developing lung conditions such as asthma...even if you never smoke in the same room as them! Please keep up the good work and stay away from smoking!

I smoked for 13 years and quit when I started TTC...I have been smoke free for 5 years now! And let me tell you, there are still days that I crave one but then I look at my son and I know what a great healthy lifestyle and role model I have set up for him and the craving is gone. You can do it to!

18 years or until the child moves out of your house so you are not subjecting it to secondhand smoke which causes asthma and allergies
this is a great opportunity to quit
that's what i'm using it for
not to mention now that you've got another person depending on you...don't you want to live a long healthy life so you can watch him/her grow up and have children?

after they turn 18 and move out of the house. The chemicals left on your clothes can do harm to them and cause them to have a higher risk of infections and breathing problems. You want whats best for them, right? Then don't smoke.

Why would you want to? You'll be putting both yourself and your baby at risk no matter when you start smoking again. You're already stopped, just go with that.

you should use this opportunity to quit. smoking around a new baby is very dangerous. the smoke gets into the baby's lungs too.
