If your house is on a fairly high subfloor, then it may be possible to cheaply make a hidden trap door to allow you to hide under the house (same with a basement). Otherwise, just the cost of adding any kind of hideaway space that is hidden will probably cost more than $20.

If a hideout is something you really think you need, then setting a $20 limit on it's construction cost is unrealistic.

2x4's do not cost too much for 8 foot peices. Build a square base, run chicken wire around it in a circle, only attach it at the corners. Do it again but come up a good foot and a half. Finally do it once more adding another foot and a half. Use wire to fasten the runs of chicken wire together. Put the chicken wire across the top for a roof, now using the leaves in the yard cover the cage you built with them like a big leaf pile. Lift it to enter, and hide under the pile. It will just look like a great big pile of leaves in your yard.

When I was younger, and the weather was nice, we would hide out in the bushes with an old bed sheet thrown over the bushes and sheet spread out like a tent. Or you can do this with a set of chairs and sheets. We created tunnels and apartments using the individual chairs. Cost was $0. and the fun was priceless and we cleared up the city before the aliens (mom and dad) came home. I was the caretaker and my brother would play for hours on end. Just an abundance of imagination necessary for the success.

Lots of cardboard boxes - refrigerator boxes are good and free at the appliance store. A roll of good duct tape. Let your imagination run wild. If you make it big enough, you could put a bed in there. Be careful if you need to use a knife to cut the boxes. Have fun.

close off a door to a small room. go to room next door to it and cut a small hole to crawl through to that room. use something to stick in front of the crawl way to hide it.
